Why Professional Teeth Cleaning Matters
Bacteria-laden plaque can form even with regular brushing and flossing. Over time, this can lead to tooth damage, discomfort, or even partial or complete tooth loss.
Understanding Plaque and Tartar
Plaque is a sticky, white layer that constantly forms on your teeth. The bacteria in plaque release acids that can damage teeth and irritate gums. Your body's response to this irritation may lead to gingivitis or periodontal disease.
If plaque is not removed consistently through brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar (also called calculus). Only a dentist can remove tartar during a professional cleaning—brushing alone is not enough. Maintaining oral health requires brushing twice daily, flossing at least once daily, and attending regular dental cleanings.
